CHOREIA NURSERY SCHOOL

The Choreia nursery school opened on 1 September 1999. The goal was to build an innovative venue for the city within a rich cultural environment, where there is great expertise and knowledge on early childhood and where the families and citizens have enjoyed high-quality services characterised by a good level of organisation and good teaching that focuses on listening and relationships.

It is located in the North-East District and has two nursery sections and two pre-school sections. The name Choreia was an important choice that involved various subjects who got together to discuss, compare and make a key decision in creating an identity for a place whose name is a reference point, a commitment and a message that must stand the test of time, a message for the present and the future. Choreia is a Greek name chosen from the others for its light, rich tones and its literal meaning that refers back to a dance sung by a choir or a group that generally sang in unison following simple dance steps. Right from the first year, this choice of name characterised the paths of the research projects both at the nursery and the pre-school.

Body language, one of the different fields of human experience, has been examined across the many languages which children use. The pedagogical project behind this service is based on the idea of continuity between 0 and 6 years old that is heavily inspired by the system of common values for municipal nurseries and pre-schools in Reggio Emilia: at Choreia, the nursery and pre-school share the same building and, if they so choose, families can enrol their children at the nursery who can then continue their learning experience at the pre-school without their parents submitting another application to the Municipality; this lets the children follow a solid path of continuity between 0 and 6 years old, providing a familiar learning environment for the children, parents and workers, while letting them rediscover their traces around the school and build very important and profound friendships since they are nurtured over a long period of attendance.

The school has two nursery sections: the baby section with 12 children and the toddlers/big kids section with 18 children; the pre-school has 54 children divided into two sections of mixed ages, each with 27 children. The opening hours are from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday; while an after-school service is available for families who request it from 4:00 to 6:50 pm.

The school runs from 1st September until 30th June. A private summer school is open during July.
